Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>The development of electronic and mechatronic devices in which software is embedded places high demands on <b>planning <\/b>and <strong>precision<\/strong>. This is true especially if a malfunction of the device can lead to injury or death of people. In such a case, the device is called <strong>\"safety-related\"<\/strong> or <strong>\"safety-critical\"<\/strong>. Examples of such systems are <strong>steering and braking systems<\/strong>, which must meet the highest safety standards, but also <strong>electric window lifters<\/strong>, which are typically equipped with an anti-pinch protection mechanism for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The success of such a product development project depends largely on a clear structuring of the works to be done in the course of the project. At the beginning of the project, the <strong>product architecture levels<\/strong> should be defined together with all <strong>works<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>work products (= documents)<\/strong> for each individual product architecture level. Development works and their documentation<\/h2>\n<p>Successful product development starts with looking at the product to be developed and subdividing the product into <strong>product architecture levels<\/strong>. These product architecture levels comprise at least:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>the system level,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>the hardware level<\/strong> and<\/li>\n<li><strong>the software level.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important to note that the <strong>software level<\/strong>\u00a0is always <strong>below the hardware level<\/strong> because software never exists \u201cabstractly\u201d, but is always implemented on specific hardware components such as <strong>microcontrollers<\/strong> or <strong>signal processors.<\/strong> For each hardware component with integrated software, a detailed <strong>hardware-software interface specification<\/strong> needs to be drawn up to ensure a smooth interaction between the hardware and software development teams.<\/p>\n<h3>The Role of the Design Specification<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>design specification<\/strong> of every product architecture level forms the basis for all further specifications at that level. It should include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Configuration and parameters <\/strong>of the parent system one level up,<\/li>\n<li><strong>System states and system state transitions<\/strong> of the parent system,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Names and functions of the elements<\/strong> the respective product architecture level<strong>,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Relevant laws, standards and regulations,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>External interfaces and chains of effects<\/strong> between the elements of the respective product architecture level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Safety analyses<\/h3>\n<p>Comprehensive safety analyses must be carried out from the top product architecture level down to the product architecture level under consideration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment<\/strong>\u00a0(only on the top level),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fault Tree Analysis<\/strong><strong>\u00a0(FTA),<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)<\/strong> or an FMEA variant such as an FMEDA, and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dependent Failure Analysis (DFA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p>These safety analyses should be performed as soon as the system architecture is available from the top product architecture level down to the respective product architecture level. The development steps \"Design\", \"Analysis\" and \"Requirements\" repeat on every product architecture level.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The <strong>V-model <\/strong>is vertically subdivided into the <strong>product architecture levels<\/strong> named:<br \/>the <strong>product or system level:<\/strong> the top product architecture level,<br \/>the <strong>subsystem level:<\/strong> can consist of several subsystem levels or may not exist at all,<br \/>the <strong>hardware level: <\/strong>can consist of several hardware levels, and<br \/>the <strong>software level:<\/strong> can consist of several software levels.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>3. Supporting processes and their documentation<\/h2>\n<p>Efficient and standard-compliant product development is not possible without supporting processes. The supporting processes ensure both <strong>quality assurance<\/strong> and compliance with the industry-specific functional safety standard. The main supporting processes are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>project, quality <\/strong>and <strong>functional safety management,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>competence, configuration <\/strong>and <strong>change management,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>document management<\/strong>, in particular <strong>requirements management<\/strong>, as well as<\/li>\n<li><strong>test management <\/strong>including integration and test strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The autoConform\u00ae Software Suite helps companies ensure the long-term quality and safety of their products.
