Safety-related and safety-critical products:
Underlying Standards
Which standards are relevant for my product and how do I implement them?
Which standards are relevant for my product during product development?
Which standards must be observed and adhered to throughout the entire product life cycle?
How do the standards relevant for my product differ from the standards for other products and industries?
Safety-critical products must be developed according to functional safety standards. IEC 61508 forms the basis for most industry-specific functional safety standards such as
- ISO 26262: Road vehicles,
- ISO 25119: Agricultural and forestry machinery,
- IEC 60601/62304: Medical devices and software,
- ISO 13849: Machine controls in production.
In practice, the implementation of these standards is only possible with the help of software tools.

Efficient implementation of standards with autoConform®
The development of safety-critical products differs from industry to industry in terms of the technical vocabulary used and methodological details. However, the basic normative specifications and procedures for the development, production and maintenance of safety-critical products are the same across all industries.
The industry-specific standards for functional safety refer to generally applicable, i.e. non-industry-specific, standards with regard to the processes to be followed and the safety analyses to be carried out. These general standards include, for example:
- ISO/IEC 15288 for system life cycles,
- IEC 61882 for HAZOP analyses and
- IEC 61025 for fault tree analyses.
The autoConform® methodology, software and engineering services support you in implementing the standards mentioned above efficiently.
